Back Online STEM Initiatives: A Hands-On Training Workshop (Solana G & H)

In the Race to the Top competition, competitive preference was given to STEM initiatives and many online and blended programs are seeking resources for delivering high quality STEM learning. But what kinds of STEM resources are available? Here is a unique opportunity to learn from online STEM resource developers themselves. See new tools and technologies and pick an in-depth training session that best fits the needs of your classroom, school, program, or district!
In this workshop, participants will sample from the broad range of practices and technologies available for implementing high quality STEM learning in online and blended settings. The workshop will feature an initial session of live demonstrations and test-drives of various cyberlearning tools, virtual labs, and other online STEM resources. Participants will then select an in-depth hands-on training session provided by the developer/publisher and learn how to engage students with online STEM resources. The goal of the workshop is to help participants improve the quality of their STEM courses, to exchange best practices, and learn about the latest tools and technologies for online and blended STEM initiatives. This year a special emphasis is on showcasing tools for fostering computational thinking across STEM disciplines.
The workshop will consist of two highly interactive, hands-on sessions: 1. Hands-on demo session. Check out interactive and hands-on demonstrations of online STEM tools, investigations, resources, and technologies. 2. In-depth hands-on training session. Select the STEM tool that best fits your interests or needs and participate in a training session that will help you learn how to integrate the tool into your courses. Interact with tool developers, publishers and peers with similar interests and needs!

StarLogo (www.imaginationtoolbox.org) - is an agent based modeling system with a blocks-based programming language and 3D world. It is ideal for teaching students (grades 6-12) to program simulations and games. SL can be use for game programming.
NetLogo (htp://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo) - NetLogo is a programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena. It enables students and teachers to explore and create simulations of complex systems, and to develop novel web-based activities. The extensive Models Library can also be accessed as applets online without a download, and NetLogo enables you to create your own online applets. There's also a Community Models Library of NL models built by the User Community of students, educators, and researchers.
PhET Physics Simulations (http://phet.colorado.edu) PhET Interactive Simulations has developed a suite of over 90 simulations for teaching and learning physics, chemistry, biology, earth science and math. The simulations create animated, interactive, game-like environments which engage students in active thinking, encourage experimentation, and help develop visual and conceptual models of physical phenomena. Many serve as virtual lab environments, and enable inquiry-based learning for online education.
Concord (www.concord.org) is a web portal that houses student materials that use dynamic interactive models and integrated data collection using probes. Associated embedded assessment systems are use to collate student work for both teachers and researchers. The materials cover physics, chemistry, and biology, ranging in grade level form middle to high school.
iLabs (Remote online labs) (www.ilabcentral.org) iLab allows students to run experiments on real equipment (not simulations) via their web browser. These experiments have applications in chemistry, biology, and math/statistics.
Interactive & SUCCEED (www.shodor. org) - Interactivate is a popular set of interactive online materials for math and science education for grades 3 through 12.
SUCCEED Curriculum is a collection of activities and lesson plans adapted from Shodor's own workshops that incorporate computational elements into math and science explorations.
